Apple have release the key features of the new iOS 5 (some are brand new, some are just improved releases of the former versions found in iOS 4). Here are some of the highlights:

  • Notifications – The notification feature in iOS 5 is a major improvement. The best thing Apple did was create a centralized notification center within the iOS 5Settings. You can toggle notifications on and off, select how many alert messages you want to display and even choose to have the notifications appear on your lock screen.

YouTube Roll Out Their New Mobile Website….Better Than The iPhone App

Topic: Audio & Video, General, Internet & Online by at Thursday, July 8th, 2010

YouTube have just rolled out a new version of their mobile site. You can find it at m.youtube.com and it features what is definitely a better interface and higher quality video playback than what is available on the native iPhone YouTube app.

YouTube Mobile Video

In what maybe seen as a bit of an “in-your-face” from Google , the iPhone app lacks a lot of features that are now available on this new mobile version, plus the new site actively prompts you to to add it to your iPhone homescreen.  The mobile app is available on both iOS and Android platforms and has support for HTML5.

Features that are now available to mobile users, that aren’t accessible on the native app include auto-suggest search results and playlist creation. More importantly, though, web apps can iteratively upgrade in small doses at any time, so YouTube’s main access point (the site) remains universal across devices and consistent with the desktop site.

The new YouTube mobile site is being pushed on their servers so you should to be able to access it now, but if not you won’t have to wait long.  Give it a try and tell us what you think, is it better than the native iPhone app?

In iTunes 9, one of the great features is the Home Sharing feature which allows you to connect to other iTunes libraries on the same network.  When Home Sharing is enabled on your computer, you can access and copy music from each others iTunes libraries.  To allow other computers on your network to copy your library contents you must authorize your iTunes account on the other computer.  To discourage users from sharing their library with lots of people, you are limited to sharing your library with five people.

Checkout our simple ‘How To’ guide to setting up the Home sharing feature.

iOS has a bigger development army than Android, but will it be ‘cross-platform’ apps that rule the day?

Too often is it the case that raw numbers of available apps are bandied about when it comes to the comparison of mobile OS, but rarely do we have any idea of just how many people are working behind the scenes pushing out the content for each platform.  However, AppStoreHQ have filled this void today with their dev directory, a list they claim to contain 55,000+ coders whose work is currently on show on the App Store or the Android Market.  Taking it a step further, they have grouped them into neat piles of Apple, Google and ‘Gapple’ programmers.  It’s obvious that single platform development is the norm, with Apple holding the bigger stake.  But highlighted are some of the most well know and well funded apps dealing with both sides.  However, an article from BNET points out the difficulties faced by smaller developer who may not be able to call apon the necessary resources required to transfer content from one platform to another.
