Skype updated for iOS 4, background VoIP now on the go!

Topic: Apple, Internet & Online, Internet & Online, iPhone, Mac, Mobile & Portable by at Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Finally Skype have got their act together and have embraced all that is iOS4.  As far back as March, Skype was see as one of the apps to benefit from the new multitasking expected in iOS4.  But, while it’s taken a little time to make it happen iOS4 compatibility is finally available on Skype.

The most obvious improvement is a crisper, more retina display friendly interface but most of all background VoIP.  A notification window pops up whenever you’re called or messaged and you can stay connected even when using other apps.  It works just like the native phone and messaging apps in that even from the lock screen you’ll be notified of a call or message and by simply swiping the the unlock, you’ll be taken to the call or message.  Video calling is still no an option.

Skype have said that they will not be charging a supplement to make Skype calls over 3G, but this is a bit unclear as to whether this means there will be no 3G VoIP or that there will and tey’re just not charging.   Fingers crossed it’s the latter.

iOS has a bigger development army than Android, but will it be ‘cross-platform’ apps that rule the day?

Too often is it the case that raw numbers of available apps are bandied about when it comes to the comparison of mobile OS, but rarely do we have any idea of just how many people are working behind the scenes pushing out the content for each platform.  However, AppStoreHQ have filled this void today with their dev directory, a list they claim to contain 55,000+ coders whose work is currently on show on the App Store or the Android Market.  Taking it a step further, they have grouped them into neat piles of Apple, Google and ‘Gapple’ programmers.  It’s obvious that single platform development is the norm, with Apple holding the bigger stake.  But highlighted are some of the most well know and well funded apps dealing with both sides.  However, an article from BNET points out the difficulties faced by smaller developer who may not be able to call apon the necessary resources required to transfer content from one platform to another.

Nothing surprising here, but the Facebook app that you are never off of is now compatible with Apple’s iOS4.

Fast app switching, high resolution icons, Korean & Russian localization.  As we said, nothing spectacular.  Maybe background images and video upload are on the Facebook guys list of things to-do, but now at least it’s rockin’ the crisp display features we expect from the iPhone 4.
